Just a few hours before the plane was supposed to take off, the deportation of the aspiring Munich nursing assistant Daniel Mangala was prevented.

After his employer fought for him for days, Interior Minister Joachim Herrmann decided that the 26-year-old could stay for the time being.

Munich/Hof – The good news reached David Strobel shortly after he was faced with a completely dejected Daniel Mangala in the deportation prison.

Strobel looks after the trainees at the Münchenstift - among them is the aspiring nursing assistant Daniel Mangala from the Congo.

He is tolerated in Germany.

At an appointment with the immigration authorities in Neuburg-Schrobenhausen, he was arrested on Friday and taken to the deportation prison in handcuffs.

The plane to his homeland, from which he fled five years ago, was supposed to take off from Hof last night.

But the deportation was prevented at the last moment.

Popular and well integrated: employers and colleagues fought against deportation

Strobel and his colleagues found out about this last night.

They had been fighting for the 26-year-old since Friday - they contacted authorities and spoke everywhere for the popular and well-integrated Congolese.

They submitted a petition to the state parliament, and Mangala's lawyer filed an urgent appeal.

Munich's third mayor, Verena Dietl, who is chairwoman of the Münchenstift supervisory board, also stood up for the 26-year-old.

Yesterday she wrote a letter to Bavaria's Interior Minister Joachim Herrmann (CSU) and described the case to him.

Mangala is perfectly integrated, highly valued and has already been confirmed for general nursing training starting in the fall.

“As a nursing facility, the Münchenstift is dependent on motivated and integrated trainees from abroad,” writes Dietl.

This is an essential pillar in combating the shortage of skilled workers.

“I would like to urgently ask you to address the matter quickly, to issue a toleration status and thus prevent an incomprehensible deportation.”

Munich's third mayor also took action - with success: deportation was suspended

And indeed: After requests from Verena Dietl, the state government's integration commissioner, and after consultation with the Neuburg-Schrobenhausen district administrator responsible for the case, the Interior Minister decided yesterday that the deportation would be suspended, as a spokeswoman told our newspaper when asked.

David Strobel was still in Hof when he heard about the decision.

He had visited Mangala there in the afternoon - and found him completely depressed and apathetic.

He hadn't dared to give him hope.

But he really wanted to tell him how many people have been fighting for him since Friday.

When he found out a short time later that the 26-year-old would be allowed to return to Munich, he immediately drove back to the prison - hoping to be able to take Daniel Mangala with him straight to Munich.
