The Knesset plenum approved last night (Wednesday) in second and third reading the extension of the temporary order raising by one year the age of exemption from reserve service with the support of 44 MKs, compared to 30 who opposed. This is to distinguish it from the rest of the laws and regulations, which remain in effect as long as they have not been repealed or amended.

It is proposed to extend until June 30, 2024 the temporary order that raises the age of exemption from reserve service by one year, as follows: in relation to a veteran who is not an officer, the exemption will be granted at age 41 instead of at age 40; For an officer veteran, the exemption will be granted at the age of 46 instead of the age of 45, and in relation to veterans who serve in certain professions or positions established by the decree of the Minister of Defense (professions in the field of medicine, professions that are an integral part of the IDF air crews, mechanics, technicians, etc.) the exemption age will be raised to 50 instead of 49.

The temporary order was set for two months and it is set to expire today, on February 29, 2024. Now, it has been proposed to extend it by four months, until June 30, 2024. According to the proposal, the call-up to the reserve servants during the period of raising the exemption age will only be for positions in the warrior formation, unless emergency circumstances apply which require a call to the reserves also for those who are not part of this system.

The explanation for the proposal reads: "In view of the continuation of the fighting and the emergency mobilization and the significant contribution of the reservists to the fighting efforts, the release of thousands of reservists in combat positions and combat supporters during combat will significantly harm the operational competence and combat capability of the IDF." It

also states: "It is not possible At the present time, to replace the reservists who are expected to be released due to their age, with other servicemen, because this may harm the operational competence of the units in which those reservists who are expected to be released due to their age serve.

Also, and in order not to harm the continuity of the units' functioning and their operational competence, it is not possible to rely on the volunteering of individuals for reserve service."

"In the law that is laid down here, the word all is missing."

Lapid/Reuven Castro

The head of the opposition, MK Yair Lapid: "The word 'all' is missing from the law that is being put here.

If it doesn't have the word all in it, it's not a law - it's a decree.

A decree because it rests on only one public, the public on which everything always lands on its head.

The same public that is now in Khan Yunis, on the northern border, works and pays taxes.

If it's not for everyone - it's not a law.

If we recruit a quarter of the ultra-Orthodox between the ages of 29 and 49, who can serve - we don't need to extend the reserve service by one day."
