The West condemned the invasion of Ukraine, assuring it of its support and imposing unprecedented sanctions on the aggressor.

The objectives of the latter were clear: to hit Russia in the wallet and limit its access to Western technology.

The general view was that Ukraine's valor and the determination of its allies would lead Putin into an economic crisis and hold him back.

But that did not work.

Not because Russia is stronger than previously thought, but because of a combination of indiscipline and inconsistency.

It didn't work in the same way that a leaky umbrella doesn't protect against rain.
