There is a spectacular turnaround in the power struggle at Bundesliga soccer club VfB Stuttgart.
CEO Thomas Hitzlsperger has surprisingly withdrawn his candidacy for the office of president.
"I do this out of responsibility towards our association and towards my employees," says Hitzlsperger in a video statement.
“We need rest in the club again.
With my decision I want to do my part. "
Ex-national player Hitzlsperger had announced shortly before the turn of the year that he would apply for the office of president and compete against incumbent Claus Vogt.
Recently, the dirty dispute between Vogt and the club leadership had come to a head.
Vogt had announced in a message last Wednesday that he wanted to postpone the general meeting planned for March 18 to September and wrote of the "greatest internal crisis that this association has experienced in its lively history."
As a reason for the postponement, Vogt named »legitimate interests of the members«, ie possible technical problems with the digital event as well as the lack of complete clarification of the »data affair«.
This further divides the camps, an order for a "necessary legal assessment" to a law firm after the transfer of member data to third parties has not yet been placed, according to Vogt.
Postponing the agreed date of the general meeting would, however, violate the association's statutes, countered the two other presidium members Bernd Gaiser and Rainer Mutschler.
There is a "recognizable crack in the presidium", a "dissent on numerous topics for some time".
How it continues now is open.
“We've done a really great job at every level and we're playing a fantastic season.
We can all be very proud of that, and I want to continue to concentrate on that, ”said Hitzlsperger on Sunday.
