Goalkeeper Péter Gulácsi from Bundesliga soccer club RB Leipzig has opposed the restriction of the rights of sexual minorities in his home country Hungary.
In a Facebook post, the 30-year-old criticized the law passed at the end of December, according to which homosexual couples are not allowed to adopt children.
»Everyone has the right to equality.
Every child has the right to grow up in a happy family - no matter how many people it consists of, what skin color you have, who you love or what you believe in, «wrote Gulácsi.
He also posted a photo of himself and his wife Diana, on which they both painted a family of stick figures on the palm of their left hand.
After just three hours, the entry had over 4,000 comments, most of them in Hungarian.
According to Gulácsi's PR agency, a lot of the comments are negative.
The goalkeeper also wrote that during his time abroad he had "met many different people with different nationalities, different religions or cultures and philosophies of life."
He noticed "that the fact that not everyone is the same only makes the world more colorful and that the most important thing is love, acceptance and tolerance for others."
Gulácsi's voice has weight in Hungary.
The country's two-time Footballer of the Year has been involved in charities for a long time, helping medical institutions with his wife and campaigning for animal welfare.
