Borussia Mönchengladbach and VfL Wolfsburg get important points in the relegation battle, Fürth defeats Hertha BSC and VfL Bochum takes revenge against Bayern Munich for a historic defeat.

A look at the 22nd matchday on Saturday afternoon in the Bundesliga.

In the first leg, VfL Bochum lost 7-0 at Bayern – it was Bochum's heaviest defeat in the Bundesliga.

In the second leg, too, everything seemed to be taking its usual course when Robert Lewandowski scored early for the visitors (9th).

But then VfL turned up the heat and showed enthusiastic football: Christopher Antwi-Adjei equalized (14'), Jürgen Locadia scored with a hand penalty (38') and then there was even magic: leg shot, heel trick, long shot in the corner - Cristian Gamboas 3: 1 (40') was just as worth seeing as Gerrit Holtmann's shot into the far corner just before the break (44).

Bayern coach Julian Nagelsmann reacted, brought in Corentin Tolisso for the indisposed Dayot Upamecano and his team pushed for goals: Lewandowski missed the first opportunity (52'), but VfL continued to seek relief.

With his second goal, Lewandowski started Munich's final offensive (75'), during which he hit the bar again (86').

Ultimately, VfL confidently inflicted Bayern's fourth defeat in the Bundesliga season and is now six points ahead of the relegation rank.

What a season for Borussia Mönchengladbach: after 21 matchdays they were just one point ahead of table 16.

– FC Augsburg.

In the "final" in the relegation battle, there was a direct duel.

And the Gladbachers accepted the game, which was also so important for coach Adi Hütter: After a moment of shock from Augsburg by André Hahn (12th), the hosts had good chances through Florian Neuhaus (13th) and Breel Embolo (25th) before Kouadio Koné headed to make it 1-0 (30').

Just 26 seconds were played in the second half when Jonas Hofmann scored from the left (46').

Iago shortened the lead (55'), Ramy Bensebaini restored the old gap (67').

Alfreð Finnbogason set the final point (90+3).

VfL Wolfsburg had ended their winning streak last week with a win against bottom-placed Fürth.

This did not initially lead to more self-confidence, the hosts were the more dangerous team.

But then Martin Hinteregger brought down Wolfsburg's attacker Max Kruse on the penalty line, Kruse accepted the invitation and converted the penalty safely (28').

This makes him the first player in Bundesliga history to score a penalty for four clubs.

As a result, Frankfurt acted without ideas and missed important points in the fight for European places, as Dodi Lukebakio also scored for the guests (90 + 3).

Before the game, SC trainer Christian Streich had warned of the “dynamics and physicality” of the guests.

He should have mentioned the pressing, because this initially caused the Freiburg team big problems.

Mainz was more active, Mainz was more dangerous and Mainz scored the lead after a turbulent situation through Alexander Hack (31st).

In the period that followed, the hosts also had difficulties in putting the Mainz defense under pressure and in controlling the offensive of the 05ers.

It took the eternal joker Nils Petersen: The veteran scored shortly after being substituted on to make it 1-1 (69th).

In the duel between the two weakest defensive lines in the league, it took less than 30 seconds for the hosts to celebrate.

Paul Seguin served captain Branimir Hrgota, who cleared Alexander Schwolow into the far corner (1st).

Hertha wanted to correct the deficit immediately, after four home games without defeat, the Fürth team was much more stable than in the first half of the season.

It was a respectable game with chances for both sides.

The 2:0 came from a hand penalty – Hrgota scored again (70th).

Linus Gechter headed the ball home (82').

It was the 17-year-old's first Bundesliga goal.
