Bayern Munich's Polish striker Robert Lewandowski has broken off cooperation with Chinese telecoms giant Huawei, accused by the media of collaborating with Russia in the context of the war in Ukraine.
The company dismissed the accusations, calling them "fake news."
“Today we have taken the decision to end the marketing cooperation between Robert Lewandowski and the Huawei brand.
Thus, the performance of all promotional services has been suspended on our part, ”said footballer Tomasz Zawislak's agent in a statement, without specifying the reason for the break.
According to Polish media, this decision is linked to an article in the British daily Daily Mail accusing Huawei of having helped Russia to secure its internet against attacks by pro-Ukrainian hackers.
The Daily Mail quoted in its article a report published on a Chinese website and which subsequently disappeared from the web.
The Chinese group confirmed the split in a very brief statement.
"Huawei CBG Poland regrets the end of its partnership with the Golden Shoe 2021. We appreciate our years-long cooperation and wish them every success in the future," Huawei said.
In the following sentence, the Polish branch of the Chinese group pointed out that the Daily Mail publication was "fake news" and that "the information it contains is not true".
The first Saturday following the Russian attack in Ukraine, Lewandowski wore an armband in the colors of Ukraine during a match.
“The world cannot accept what is happening there.
I hope the whole world will support Ukraine”, said the best Fifa player 2020 and 2021.
