The ice hockey world association has withdrawn Russia from the 2023 world championship planned in St. Petersburg.
It will soon be decided where the 2023 World Cup will take place.
Zurich – The Ice Hockey World Championship 2023 will not take place in Russia.
The world association confirmed this on Tuesday in Zurich.
This step, decided by the IIHF Council, was "due to concern for the safety and well-being of all participating players, officials, the media and fans," the IIHF said in a statement.
The world association wants to decide on a replacement organizer for the Russian metropolis at its annual congress in Tampere at the end of May.
The 2022 World Cup will take place in Finland from May 13th to 29th.
For the current year, the IIHF had already canceled all events planned in Russia and also excluded the national teams of Russia and the Russian ally Belarus from the upcoming World Championship tournament.
