Wimbledon, a tournament of customs and even of etiquette for tennis players, always in white, will stop using the terms 'Lady' and 'Miss' in front of the women champions in its list of winners.
Something that already happened with men.
Without going any further, last year, the All England Lawn Tennis Club designated the tournament winner, Australian Ashleigh Barty, "Miss A. Barty", while the winner of the men's draw, Serbian Novak Djokovic, simply went " N.
Djokovic”.
According to the
Times
, the Wimbledon organizers had already decided in 2019 not to announce the name of the players preceded by "Miss" or "Mrs" upon arrival on the courts and have made the decision not to use them anymore for the winners either.
Similarly, they also chose not to use the married name for the Wimbledon champions.
For example, the American Chris Evert appears with that name in the list of winners for her victory in 1976, but she was also in 1981 as "Mrs. JM Lloyd", after her marriage in 1979 with the British tennis player John Lloyd.
She will appear from now on in that 1981 as “C.
Evert Lloyd”.
Wimbledon, the third major of the year - preceded by the Australian Open and Roland Garros, and followed by the United States Open - is the oldest event on the circuit, as it has been held since 1877. This year, the tournament will be held from 27 from June to July 10.
