Yuris van Aubrey, a lover of mathematics and physics, delves into the climate crisis and watches for hours football from all over the world.

What did footballers do in the midst of the outbreak of the corona plague in the spring of 2020?

At best, they did not break the rules of quarantine and took care to train alone, but Yuris van Aubrey had more fascinating plans.

Together with his good friend Tim Rasbor, who once grew up in the Ajax academy, he decided to set up an online football school, via YouTube.

"Children are not allowed to go to training and we wanted to use the time to give them tools that are generally lacking. We recorded more than 1,000 videos in which we demonstrate actions we learned at the beginning - dribbling, deception, thinking exercises. We invested more than a week, many hours a day. "But on the way we also kept fit," he explained.

Thought about others, and the world in general, is very characteristic of Van Aubrey.

The new purchasing player of Maccabi Tel Aviv is a broad-minded person who likes to get to know different cultures and delve into different professions.

When he was 9, he traveled with his family on a nearly year-long trip around the world and visited the United States, Australia, New Zealand and Indonesia, among others.

Since then, the longing for travel has entered deep into his heart.

He's crazy about football, watches countless games and summaries on TV and computer, is interested in diverse leagues and tries to learn something new every day, but that's not the only thing that keeps him busy.

Van Aubrey has taken law and psychology courses at the university and defines himself as a fan of mathematics and physics.

He also delves into the climate crisis, eager to contribute his humble part to saving the planet and so Matthew Flamini is an inspiration to him, thanks to the success of the former Arsenal midfielder in investing in green energy.

When it comes to social engagement, the Dutchman admires LeBron James.

Was a housemate of Frank Rijkaard

Growing up in an established family, Van Oberie did not need football to survive financially, but the pure love of the game always accompanied him and a deep acquaintance of Frank Rijkaard certainly did not matter.

The son of the legendary former star is one of the closest friends so he visited his home many times in his youth.

The family album even retains a picture in which little Yuris plays soccer in the yard with his grandfather and Rijkaard himself.

It was an excellent preparation for a promising career, even if the aspiration to be accepted into Ajax's academy never materialized.

Instead, the 12-year-old was signed to the Alkmaar school, which is also considered one of the best in the country.

Over the years, Van Aubrey has earned the status of one of the most prominent talents, represented the Netherlands in the youth teams of all ages and was even included as a bench player on the roster that won the 2011 European Under-17 Championship, in partnership with Memphis Depay.

Two years later, he made his debut in Alkmaar's senior team under Dick Advocate, but the veteran coach did not want to promote youngsters then so in the 2014/15 season the midfielder wandered on loan to the humble Dordrecht.

This adventure ended in relegation, but Van Aubrey actually impressed many with his elegant skills and excellent game vision.

He reached his peak when he cooked with a spectacular heel delivery goal in the sensational win over Ajax - arguably the most beautiful assist of his career to date.

Admires Fabregas and Iniesta

This ascent continued when he returned to Alkmaar, and at one point it seemed that he might develop into the team leader in midfield.

In his youth, Van Aubrey adored Cesc Fabregas and then Andres Iniesta burst into consciousness and became his ultimate idol - this is how he wanted to see himself.

"Anders is my favorite actor and I can not stop watching his performance in the video," he said - and tried to emulate him a bit.

But then coach John van den Brom arrived and declared that Van Oberie was not fit to function as a key midfielder.

In light of this bizarre determination, an attempt was made to find him a new spot on the pitch, usually as a left winger, but his efficiency declined substantially and this eventually led to an explosion, including rude interviews in the media.

In 2018, after becoming a rotation player at best, Van Aubrey chose to pack his belongings and move to Utrecht.

A few weeks later, quite ironically, Advocate was appointed coach, but this time the relationship was excellent, and the experienced mentor conceived a more defensive role for Van Aubrey than usual and even banned him from joining the attacks.

In this position was expressed his ability to read the game in front of most of the opponents and he even learned to bump into and soil the uniform in the mud - an action he avoided in his early years because he preferred to see himself as an architect with a white collar.

"Van Aubrey reinvented himself," the headline in the Football International newspaper stated at the time.

Always dreamed of playing outside the Netherlands

The term in Utrecht was good for him and even the appointment of Van den Brom did not derail him - because the boss was convinced this time that his apprentice could really be a dominant central contact.

The 2019/20 season was ruined due to an ankle and corona injury, but until a year ago Van Aubrey continued to be one of the most important and valued players on the team.

However, last season was much less successful for him and the number of appearances in the starting lineup dropped to only 12.

As a result, both sides realized in advance that there was no point in extending his contract and he left as a free agent.

Twente, who finished last season in fourth place and is returning to her status as a significant force in Dutch football, seriously considered signing him as a free agent, but the midfielder preferred Maccabi Tel Aviv.

Van Aubrey did so for three reasons.

First, his mother is Israeli and therefore the state is intriguing and attractive to him.

Second, he prefers to be a leading player at 28 and will be much more likely to do so in an inferior league compared to the Dutch.

Third, he always aspired to play outside the homeland, to live somewhere else to experience a new culture - it interests him both as a footballer and as a person.

"In the past I had several opportunities to play outside the Netherlands, but it never felt right until the end. Today I am valued in Utrecht and do not intend to leave, but that is a goal I intend to fulfill in due course. I do not want to lose experiences. It will happen when the offer really suits me ", He said in 2019.

After three years, it seems that the right offer has arrived.

Will they cooperate next season?

"Changing the atmosphere brings in new energies"

This is the second time in his career that Van Aubrey chooses to leave his team and embark on an unfamiliar adventure when he loses his place in the squad.

After leaving Alkmaar in favor of Utrecht, he testified: "Sometimes it's good to replace the familiar atmosphere. I spent 12 years in Alkmaar, half my life. I knew everything and everyone and it felt the same. I owe a lot to this club, but there was a sense of accomplishment. Utrecht has a room "New clothing, a new way of working and I feel a new kind of pressure. It did me good, and instilled new energies in me. I wanted to prove to everyone that I am capable of success outside of Alkmaar as well."

And this is, more or less, what awaits him in Israel - an unfamiliar atmosphere, a new method of work, a new kind of pressure.

The Dutchman will have to prove himself to fans who did not know him at all until now and adapt to a completely different mentality.

It may infuse him with new energies and work in his favor - and in Utrecht this motivation lasted for three years.

Perhaps it is no coincidence that Van Aubrey signed with Maccabi Tel Aviv for three years.

Wanted new energies.

"See the full picture"

"For a while, it seemed that Yuris had the potential to become a key player at Alkmaar because he excelled in technical ability and dedication. In the end, he became the 12th player - effective and useful, but not particularly impressive. That's also what happened in Utrecht in the end. He is a good and nice person and has many interests outside of football as well, "says Dutch journalist Jose Hershersheid.

"The choice of Israel is not surprising, because Yuris sees the full picture and thinks not only about net football," says the journalist.

Maccabi Tel Aviv gets, then, a very legitimate player in the Dutch league, long before he reaches the end of his career.

Even in a mediocre minus season in 2021/22, Van Uber has demonstrated an ability that could easily make him a star in the Premier League and if he returns to fitness from 2020, 2018 or 2016, the situation will be even better.

Given its roots and intelligence, adaptation may be relatively easy and on paper it is a particularly promising addition of power.
