Thomas Reis will be the new coach of FC Schalke 04. The club confirmed this in a statement.

The bottom of the table in the Bundesliga agreed with Reis' ex-club, VfL Bochum, to pay a fee.

In Bochum, Reis still had a contract that was valid until the end of the season.

The 49-year-old was on leave in September after a 3-1 draw at Schalke.

He succeeds Frank Kramer.

Reis was head coach at VfL Bochum from 2019 to 2022.

Bochum returned to the Bundesliga during this period, and Reis also held the league with the club last season.

In the current season the team lost the first six games;

Rice had to go.

Schalke is said to have been in contact with the former VfL coach in the summer, but Bochum didn't want to let Reis go at the time.

Schalke's sports director Rouven Schröder surprisingly announced his resignation on Wednesday afternoon.

The 47-year-old gave personal reasons for the early exit from his contract.

»The decision to leave Schalke 04 was anything but easy for me.

Together we have experienced 18 highly intensive months.

I wish the employees and fans of FC Schalke 04 all the best for the future and keep my fingers crossed that they stay up at the end of the season,” commented Schröder.

Sport director Peter Knäbel and his team will take over his duties until further notice.

Schröder started the 2021/2022 season as sports director at the then relegated Revier club and contributed to the return of the traditional club to the Bundesliga with his transfer policy.

But after the most recent sporting crisis with six competitive defeats in a row, which cost Kramer his job, Schröder also came under increasing pressure.
