Bundesliga: Borussia Dortmund loses to VfL Wolfsburg for the first time since 2015

Since winning the DFB Cup in 2015, Wolfsburg had played 14 competitive games against BVB and not won once. That streak has now ended, also because Dortmund squandered some good scoring chances.

VfL Wolfsburg won 2-0 (1-0) against Borussia Dortmund in the Bundesliga.

The goals were scored by Wolfsburg central defender Micky van de Ven with a header (6th minute) and substitute striker Lukas Nmecha in added time (90'+2').

With the success ended a misery in Wolfsburg against BVB.

Since winning the DFB Cup final in 2015, the Wolves have only drawn once in 14 games against Dortmund and not won at all – with a goal difference of 5:39.

Not only did this negative series break, VfL also extended its currently unbeaten series to eight competitive games and is now eighth in the table.

Dortmund is fourth, at least temporarily, but can still fall back to sixth place.

Dortmund made the game, Wolfsburg wanted to counter and it was a fast-paced first half.

Omar Marmoush failed in the third minute because of the in-form BVB keeper Gregor Kobel.

Shortly thereafter, Sebastian Bornauw extended a corner at the first post, van de Ven was ready behind and headed in (6').

After falling behind early on, the guests got stronger, left winger Donyell Malen (19', 21') had the first shots.

BVB had a huge opportunity after a bad pass from Bornauw.

Jude Bellingham quickly decided on the right pass to Youssoufa Moukoko - but executed it poorly, which defused the situation (22nd).

Süle fails on the goal frame

Dortmund looked superior in terms of play, but Wolfsburg remained dangerous.

Niklas Süle came just in time against Jonas (31') after a strong pass from Ridle Baku, Jakub Kamiński shot from five meters from the subsequent corner, and Dortmund's Raphaël Guerreiro (32') saved on the line.

Shortly before the break, Marmoush narrowly missed the BVB goal (40'), Süle scored twice for Dortmund: first from a short distance just wide (43'), then he hit the post from the inside right position (45'+1').

It was just as stormy in the second round, but with fewer chances.

The two goalkeepers prevented further goals: Wolfsburg's Koen Casteels in a header from Moukoko (56th) and Dortmund's Kobel in an attempt by Wind (61st).

The evening seemed to be particularly bitter for the guests when midfield star Bellingham went down in the penalty area after a duel with Paulo Otávio, injuring his shoulder (63').

He received treatment on the field but was then able to continue playing.

In the tackle, he tripped over Otávio's outstretched foot, but failed to earn a penalty.

At the latest when substitute Nmecha pushed a sharp cross pass from Patrick Wimmer over the goal line to make it 2-0, the game was decided (90+2).
