Michael Schumacher's title Ferrari from 2003 was auctioned for 13 million Swiss francs (13.1 million euros).
According to auction house Sotheby's, which sold the F2003-GA in Geneva on Wednesday, this is the highest hammer price ever achieved for a modern Formula 1 racing car.
With taxes and fees, the purchase price even increases to 14.6 million euros.
The action house had previously expected a price of seven to nine million euros.
Schumacher won five races with the 229 chassis in 2003 and secured the sixth of his seven world championship titles.
The car had a longer wheelbase compared to the previous model and an engine with improved weight distribution.
Manufacturer and owner Ferrari thus won the fifth constructors' world championship title in a row.
The racing car was overhauled again this year by the Italian car manufacturer.
"It's roadworthy if they dare and if they fit in," said an auctioneer.
In August, Schumacher's 1998 Ferrari F300 was sold for $6.22 million (€6.2 million) by RM Sotheby's.
The car auction house, part-owned by Sotheby's, was also involved in the Geneva auction.
