The English Football Association has opened an investigation following homophobic chants during the FA Cup match between Manchester United and Everton on Friday in which the Devils won 3:1 at Old Trafford.
Some fans of the team from Liverpool were heard using harsh language against the team manager Frank Lampard.
"We stand firmly against all forms of discrimination and we strive to ensure that our game is a safe environment for all, that truly embraces diversity and stands up to hateful behavior both on and off the pitch," said an FA spokesman.
In a statement to the British media, United wrote: "Homophobia, like all forms of discrimination, has no place in football. Manchester United is proud of its diverse fan base and the work we have done to reduce cases such as we sadly heard today."
Everton added that homophobia has no place "in our stadiums, our clubs, our communities or our game".
The Toffees also issued a statement that read: "The club has a zero tolerance policy regarding all forms of discrimination and welcomes the statements made by the association and Manchester United. We call on United to do everything in their power to identify the culprits and deal with them in the most severe manner."
