The financial problems of the fencing association are showing signs and are starting to hurt the athletes, after it was decided at the weekend to cancel the team's departure for the Doha Grand Prix in Qatar at the end of the month.
As a reminder, the union is currently in debt to suppliers and employees of over NIS 600,000, which stems in part from security expenses last year of NIS 250,000 for holding the World Youth Championship in Dubai, the European Senior Championship in Antalya and the World Senior Championship in Cairo and the reduction of the annual budget that goes to the union, following its spending from the preferred branches.
The team was supposed to go to the opening competition of the season and continue to accumulate points in the world ranking, which will help them enter the Olympic Games in Paris, but the large expenses for the destination prevent them from continuing to compete and currently it is not known where and when they will compete again.
But there is also a bit of encouraging news, when a few days before the union's general assembly was supposed to convene, to decide on a "voluntary liquidation" and transfer the management of the union to the director of sports or to a liquidator appointed on his behalf, the union managed to reach an agreement to distribute the debts, to prevent the move for the time being.
This whole situation comes after a great year for the sport, which culminated with the team javelin team winning the silver medal at the European Championships for the first time in history, with the women's team also showing great progress and succeeding in placing high in the round competitions and the many medals that the young athletes manage to bring.
