(CNN) - The travel speed of Hurricane Dorian has decreased to 1.6 kilometers per hour, less than the speed at which most people walk.

The slowdown means that the island of Grand Bahama could be in Dorian's eye for more than nine hours.

The rhythm of this cyclone is not uncommon among hurricanes.

Recent hurricanes Harvey and Florence also slowed down significantly after touching the ground.

But having touched down was not what stopped Dorian, but it has to do with what the storm is leading.

A high pressure system over the western Atlantic prevents it from moving northward, and a weakness in the high pressure system is slowing it down.

At some point during the next 24 hours, the system will weaken enough for the hurricane to move northwest.
