(CNN) - Norwegian oil company Equinor is working to clean up an oil spill after Hurricane Dorian razed its facilities in the Bahamas and damaged some oil tanks.

The company said Wednesday that it completed air and land surveillance and did not observe any oil leaks to the sea from its South Riding Point terminal. However, aerial surveillance revealed a “potential product” in open water 70 or 80 kilometers (approximately 40-50 miles) northeast of the terminal, near Little Abaco Island. The source of the product is unknown, but it may also have affected a section of the coast. Equinor says he is still investigating.

Initial evaluations of the company revealed that the South Riding Point terminal was damaged and oil was observed in the ground. US emergency ships are helping in cleaning and to avoid any additional spillage. Oil from the damaged tanks was moved to safer tanks and a barrier was deployed to close the port at the terminal, according to Equinor.

The terminal closed on August 31 in preparation for the storm, but at the time Dorian struck, there were still 54 people in Grand Bahama. All are confirmed as safe.

The South Riding Point terminal has 6.75 million barrels of crude and condensate storage, according to the company's website.

A CNN team in Spanish visited the area on Sunday and observed several large tanks with no roofs and minor damage. On the road leading to the facility, the team saw oil covering the road, grass and a nearby swamp.
