The farmers of Al-Hasakah province started harvesting the cotton crop several days ago in different areas. The harvesting process will be extended to all parts of the governorate during the coming period. The farmers demand the establishment of a cotton receiving center in the governorate to ensure the stability of the marketing process, especially for small agricultural holders.

A number of peasants in the province confirmed to SANA Economic Bulletin the need to reopen cotton purchasing and marketing centers in Al-Hasakah province, which was stopped about 3 years ago, or to establish new centers and then transfer them to other provinces like wheat and barley crops.

Falah Masoud from the countryside of Derbasiyah confirmed that he is planting a cotton crop for the third year in a row in the hope of reopening the marketing center in the province of al-Hasakah or else he will have to sell it to traders for his inability to secure a means of transporting his production. From that set price was 350 SP.

The farmer Mohammed al-Shaher, from Tel Barak, pointed to the high cost of producing cotton from the beginning of planting until his harvest. He pointed out that the price set by the state to buy is profitable and a good profit margin, but in the absence of buying centers in the province goes profits to traders who control the purchase price of the farmer.

The director of Al-Hasakah Gin Engineer Mahmoud Aisha explained that several centers have been identified to receive cotton produced in Al-Hasakah governorate, namely Hama governorate, Al-Sabkha reception center in Al-Raqqa countryside and the old Deir Ezzor gin where the kilogram of cotton is purchased at a price of 360 Syrian Pounds in addition to 60 Syrian Pounds per kilogram. For cotton that is marketed to Hama, wages for transporting cotton to Sabkha and Deir ez-Zor grocery are estimated later, pointing out that the receiving centers were suspended after the storage warehouses of cotton were vandalized and burned during the 2015 and 2016 seasons.

The Director of Agriculture Eng. Ragab Salama pointed out that this year's season of cotton crop is promising and is characterized by the absence of pest infections, noting that the estimated production of the province exceeds 12 thousand tons of the total cultivated area of 3075 hectares distributed in different areas of agricultural stability.
