The electricity sector faced great challenges as a result of the economic blockade imposed on the Syrian people, which doubled the costs of producing electricity and hindered the completion of projects for power plants and restricted the movement of oil derivatives necessary to operate the plants.

Eng. Mohammad Khair Al-Imam, Director of Deir Ali Power Generation Company, said in a statement to SANA Economic Bulletin that it is important to support energy stability and security for all citizens and provide the need for economic activities to ensure continuity of work and production through the development and expansion of generating stations, including Deir Ali station located 35 kilometers south of the city. Damascus, indicating that the work of the second expansion project was accomplished with national expertise and cadres according to the schedule.

The Imam that the station is one of the important and advanced stations that supply the public grid with electric power with a total capacity of up to 1500 megawatts and consists of two parts the first is a composite circuit consisting of two gas turbines and steam each capacity of 250 megawatts running on gas as the main fuel and the second circuit A vehicle consisting of two gas turbines and one steam turbine, each with a capacity of 250 MW, noting that the total capacity produced for the two sections has reached 43 million MWh to date. These groups are operated and maintained with national efforts and expertise.

The Imam explained that as a result of the increasing demand for electricity and to secure and provide it was started to complete the second expansion project of the plant in 2011 and put it on trial operation consisting of a vehicle circuit consisting of two additional gas turbines with a capacity of 250 megawatts each working on gas fuel as the main fuel and diesel fuel and steam turbine capacity of 250 MW to become the total capacity of the 750 MW plant expansion project.

It is noteworthy that the Deir Ali plant is one of the most important generating stations supplying the electrical network with a capacity of 1500 MW.
