2019-10-01T10:32:21.320Z

The Greens want to be a party for everyone and everything. Are the voters taking that away from them? In a SPIEGEL survey, the party is far behind in almost all policy areas - only in one area is it top.

In the polls, the Greens are stable at 20 percent plus X, in recent months they triumphed in the elections in Bavaria, Hesse and the European elections. They also grew in Saxony and Brandenburg.

The party is now involved in nine state governments, will soon be added two more. The Greens are a power in Germany. Green Party leader Robert Habeck already sees himself as the chairman of a "quasi-government party" that faces new challenges in the climate change package recently approved by the Grand Coalition (read an analysis here).

So are the Greens already on their way to the People's Party? To a party that is able to attract and retain as large a diverse group of voters as possible? The offers for the entire population has?

Not necessarily. For example, a new survey by opinion polling institute Civey for SPIEGEL shows that the Greens are still perceived as a one-party party. They owe their upswing above all to their climate and environmental policy.

"Which party do you think has the most skills?" was the question of pollsters on several topics.

  • The Greens are far ahead in environmental and climate policy . 40 percent certify the eco-party to be the most competent in this field. Clearly knocked down in second place are the CDU and CSU with almost 14 percent. Left, FDP and SPD come only to values below five percent, the AfD is around 10 percent (error rate 2.5 percent).
  • On the other hand, the Greens always come in third place in terms of economy , family , social affairs and foreign affairs .
  • In contrast, the CDU and the CSU have the highest competence rating in economic policy (around 37 percent). In second place (16.5 percent) follows the FDP, the Greens come with about 5 percent only in fifth place.
  • Even better, the Union cuts in foreign policy . Nearly 37 percent of the respondents consider CDU and CSU very competent in this area. The SPD followed with almost 14 percent clearly behind in second place, the Greens reach only about 5 percent.
  • In family policy , Union (23) and SPD (around 22 percent) are almost equally competent, the Greens only just under 9 percent.
  • The SPD scores (around 22 percent) most of all parties in social policy , traditionally their main concern. Here the Greens come in 5th place (around 7 percent).

In the Sunday question, the Greens are still ranked second with almost 23 percent. The ruling Social Democrats (almost 14 percent) are far behind third. CDU and CSU are clearly in the lead with almost 28 percent.
