(CNN) - The US Senator Bernie Sanders experienced "chest discomfort" on Tuesday night and will suspend the campaign "until further notice" after doctors gave him treatment for a blockage in an artery, Senior Advisor Jeff Weaver said in a statement Wednesday by the morning.

"After evaluation and medical tests, it was discovered that he had a blockage in an artery and two stents were successfully inserted," Weaver said. “Senator Sanders is talking and in a good mood. He will be resting in the next few days. We will cancel your events and appearances until further notice, and continue to provide appropriate updates. ”

Weaver delivered the news about the senator's health during a conference call around 10:30 am ET, an adviser told CNN. He read the statement that was later published and gave no further details.

Sanders, who is 78, felt the "discomfort" during a campaign event. Despite his age, he has been one of the most active in the 2020 Democratic primary camp.

Minutes after the news about the Sanders procedure was made public, his campaign rivals responded with a great deal of support.

"Bruce, the Warren team and I send our best wishes for a speedy recovery to @BernieSanders," Senator Elizabeth Warren, one of Sanders' closest allies in Washington, tweeted. "I hope to see my friend in the campaign very soon."

Mayor Pete Buttigieg also wished Sanders the best.

"All of us here at @PeteForAmerica send our best wishes for a speedy recovery to Senator @BernieSanders," Buttigieg wrote on Twitter. "We are thinking about him and his family today, and I hope to see him back in the campaign very soon."

And former Vice President Joe Biden tweeted: “. @ DrBiden and I send our best wishes to @BernieSanders, Jane and the entire Sanders family. Anyone who knows Bernie understands the strength that it is. We are sure that he will have a complete and fast recovery and we hope to see him soon. ”
