The topic of the day: The extreme right danger in Germany

The attack on Halle is a turning point - it is already the second this year: Only the murder of the Kassel district president Walter Lübcke. He was the first politician to fall victim to a right-wing extremist attack after 1945. Now, almost in a synagogue, there would have been a massacre. Only one door prevented the attacker from entering the building. He killed two passersby. Meanwhile, the 27-year-old alleged perpetrator confessed and granted a right-wing motive.

The assassination of Halle and the everyday hatred of Jews in Germany

The deed shows that the right-wing extremist threat is increasing in Germany. Jews have to fear for their lives again. We face a new form of attack: The perpetrator was radicalized in a parallel world of right-wing extremist Internet forms, broadcasting the live version on the net. The security authorities are not yet set on it - are sometimes powerless.

Where did the attacker get his knowledge for the weapons industry? Was he really acting alone? And how does politics want to react to the growing threat? All these questions are covered in the new SPIEGEL cover story.

Even Germany's right-wing populists have prepared the ground in recent years for the new terror from the right. "She (the AfD) is in it in this case, quite deep, even if no one claims that there is a direct reference to the assassin," writes Dirk Kurbjuweit in his comment.

The number of the day: 54

The Federal Government has agreed on an increase in the aviation tax: long-haul flights could be taxed in the future with 54 euros per ticket. For flights in Europe, instead of 7.50 so far in the future 11.25 euros and 30 euros for medium-haul flights. The black-and-white coalition is thus implementing the resolutions from its climate protection program. The revenue would be slightly more than 500 million euros and should offset the VAT reduction on long-distance travel of the railway.
