"National Doral" in Miami: Democrats want to prevent G7 summit in Trump's golf club

The Democrats accuse Donald Trump of wanting to use the G7 summit in the US for his business advantage. With a draft law they want to block the alignment in one of his hotels.

Democrats in the US Congress want to prevent a legislative proposal that the next G7 summit in a golf club of President Donald Trump takes place. A corresponding submission has been submitted to the House of Representatives and the Senate.

Among other things, the project aims to prevent any funding from the federal government for the summit in the golf club. MEPs said in a communication that previous G7 summits cost up to $ 40 million.

The proposed legislation would also oblige the White House to hand over all the relevant documents to Congress showing how the golf club venue was decided.

As a sign of protest against Trump, the bill has chances to pass the Democrat-dominated House of Representatives. On the other hand, the Republican-controlled Senate is unlikely to vote.

Advantage for Trump?

The White House announced on Thursday that the leaders' meeting of seven major industrialized nations will take place next year at the Trump National Doral in the state of Florida. The opposition Democrats accuse Trump of wanting to use the summit for his personal business advantage. (An overview of the trump company network can be found here.) Trump's Chief of Staff Mick Mulvaney said that the US President will not benefit from it.

Trump had praised the huge property at the recent G7 summit in Biarritz, France, in late August, and praised it as a possible landmark. He said at the time that the hotel was only a few minutes away from the airport, that every delegation could have its own building with 50 to 70 rooms. "It's a great place, the terrain is huge, hundreds of acres, so we can do whatever it takes."
