The Government of New South Wales of Australia approved the NRT public joint venture cooperation contract as early as 2014, and recently reached a cooperation agreement with MTR. NRT's public-private partnership includes a contract valued at $ 1.7 billion covering the core of the new train and railway system, and a total value of $ 2 billion. It is responsible for the combined NRT operation and maintenance contract for the Northwest Line and the City and Southwest Line until 2034 .

The Northwest Line is part of the Sydney Metro and opened to traffic as early as May 26, 2019. The route will extend 30 kilometers to the city centre and southwest Sydney.

MTR will invest in this project and assume a leading role in the project. The city, southwest line and subway northwest line will be merged into the same line from 2024. MTR will also dominate the operation.

The Sydney Metro Northwest Line is 36 kilometers in length and is fully automated. It is the most technologically advanced railway in Australia. In the initial period of operation, the Sydney Northwest MRT achieved 95% passenger satisfaction, and has already carried more than 11 million passengers in the first five months of operation.
