The rat problem in Hong Kong has always been serious. Referring to the latest document of the Legislative Council Panel on Food Safety and Environmental Hygiene, in the first 10 months of this year, the FEHD captured more than 19,000 live rats and blocked about 10,000 rat holes, both of which increased by about 44% over the same period last year. The Food and Sanitation Bureau believes that the numbers reflect the gradual effectiveness of the rodent control work in various departments. The work will continue to be strengthened in the future, including research to improve the effects of rodent bait and mousetrap, and the improvement of rear lanes of different scales.

The Food and Sanitation Bureau said it would follow up on the opinions of UK rodent experts who visited Hong Kong early last month, including improving the effects of rodent baits and traps. (Profile picture)

The latest FEHD document shows that since the city-wide cleansing operation was launched in May this year, the number of law enforcement cases against rat infestations and the number of rats caught have increased. In October this year alone, 2,305 live mice were captured, an increase of nearly a thousand from the same period last year. In addition, as of the end of October, the number of live mice captured was 19,106, an increase of 44% from 13,264 in the same period last year. The number of blocked rat holes also increased by 40%, from 7,698 last year to 10,831.

The Food and Sanitation Bureau believes that city-wide cleanliness will help arouse the public's awareness of environmental sanitation, and various departments' efforts to strengthen cleaning and rodent control have gradually achieved results. The authority stated that British rodent specialists who visited Hong Kong at the beginning of last month provided visits to Hong Kong to provide improvement methods, including ways to increase public participation and enhance the effects of rodent baits and mousetraps. They stressed that they would follow up with relevant opinions and continue to strengthen them in the future. Work with District Councils and regional groups to promote rodent control.

In addition, according to the community's opinions and health conditions, the Food and Health Bureau has identified the back lanes that need to be improved, and will carry out improvement projects of different scales, including partial resurfacing, and it is estimated that more than 30 back lanes will be involved.
