German Chancellor Angela Merkel confirmed today her country's opposition to imposing possible US sanctions on the "North Stream 2" project to transport Russian gas to Europe.

"We are against cross-border sanctions and this position was not taken yesterday ... We faced a similar problem in the context of Iran," Merkel was quoted as saying in a speech to German parliamentarians, according to TASS news agency.

"I don't see other possibilities other than going into tough talks with the United States to make sure that we consider such a practice of imposing cross-border sanctions as unacceptable," Merkel added.

The Russian presidential spokesman, Dimitri Peskov, confirmed earlier today that the US sanctions on the Russian North Stream 2 gas pipeline project are an example of unfair competition and violate international law.

And yesterday, the US Senate approved a bill on the defense budget for the new fiscal year 2020, requiring the US administration to impose sanctions on the Russian gas project "North Stream 2".
