(CNN Business) - Travis Kalanick will finally leave the company he helped build.

Kalanick, co-founder and former Uber executive director, will resign from the company's board of directors later this month to focus on other projects, Uber announced Tuesday.

"It seems to be the right time to focus on my current business and my philanthropic activities," Kalanick said in a statement. "I am proud of all that Uber has accomplished, and I will continue to encourage its future from the barrier."

Kalanick co-founded Uber in 2009 and made it the most valuable startup in the world by boosting competitors and evading regulators. The company has had problems with local and national governments, unions and even with its own drivers.

However, in June 2017, Kalanick resigned as CEO of Uber after a long series of scandals and an exodus of senior executives. But he continued to influence the company and even surprised the company by appointing several board members at the end of 2017.

When Uber went public in May, Kalanick was not included in the group of experts who rang the opening bell on the New York Stock Exchange. In recent weeks, after the end of a period of blocking actions for members of the company, Kalanick has been selling its Uber shares at full speed.

Kalanick is currently operating a startup called CloudKitchens that promises "smart kitchens for delivery-only restaurants." He also launched a risk fund, called 10100 Fund, which said it would serve as "home to my passions, investments, ideas and big bets."
