Political frictions between Bolivia and Mexico 5:07

(CNN Spanish) - The new interim business manager in Mexico, Edmundo Font, arrived in Bolivia on Friday, where he will continue the activities of the Mexican embassy in that country.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Mexico reported in a statement that the diplomat has more than 45 years in the Mexican foreign service, is the active ambassador with greater seniority and has been assigned in Central America, South America, the Caribbean, Europe, the Middle East and Asia.

Font arrives in Bolivia after, on December 30, 2019, the interim Government of Jeanine Áñez expelled the then Mexican ambassador to that country, María Teresa Mercado, after an incident was registered at her residence in La Paz, where former government officials of former President Evo Morales remain asylee.

A group of hooded men, who accompanied the charge of business of Spain in Bolivia to a courtesy visit to Mercado, were questioned by the police of Bolivia, which caused an impasse that resulted in the expulsion of several diplomats from Mexico and Spain in Bolivia.

The Bolivian Government denounced that what happened was intended to facilitate that the former asylum-seekers who have a warrant for arrest leave the residence of the Mexican ambassador. This statement was rejected by the Governments of Mexico and Spain.

On Friday, the Migration Director of Bolivia, Marcel Rivas, reported that at least six Civil Guard officials from Spain involved in the incident left Bolivia.
