(CNN) - A man died and several people were stabbed during an incident in Austin, Texas, officials said Friday.

The incident began at 7:49 am local time, when two people in the Bennu cafeteria on South Congress Avenue had an “altercation,” said Sergeant David Daniels of the Austin Police Department at a press conference on Friday. The disturbance intensified, when other customers in the store intervened and arrested the suspect.

But when the first policeman arrived, Daniels said, the suspect escaped and ran to Freebirds World Burrito, a nearby restaurant.

The police pursued him but lost sight of the suspect. When additional agents arrived to help with the search, they began receiving calls that there had been a stabbing in the burrito restaurant, Daniels said.

Once the officers entered the restaurant, they found two victims who had been stabbed, including one who was pronounced dead at the scene, Daniels confirmed. He was 20, said emergency medical services (EMS) for Austin-Travis County.

The suspect kept running, and climbed onto the roof of a nearby business from where, Daniels said. The suspect was injured and is in custody.

In total, three people were taken to a hospital for treatment: the suspect; the victim in the burritos restaurant; and the first victim in the cafeteria who was injured but was stabbed, Daniels said.

The stabbed victim, who is over 50, was left with a life-threatening injury, said the EMS of Austin-Travis County.
