A wedding was recently held in the center of the country after the groom's Jewishness was proven thanks to a 102-year-old document found in the home's attic, where he was held for decades.

The affair began a few months ago, at which point A, who was 5 years old from the USSR, turned to the "Roots" organization of the Tzahar organization. Contrary to conversion, these are people who know that they are Jewish but cannot prove it.

"Over the years, many Jews were enrolled as non-Jews, and a few generations later it is difficult for them to prove their Jewishness," explains Shimon Har Shalom, CEO of Rootim. "It may very well be Jewish according to Halacha, but the documents sometimes state the opposite, so we are required to To trace their roots in the countries of origin, ”he said.

An organization representative came to A.'s grandmother's house. It is an elderly woman who survived the siege of Leningrad and still lives in the city, which has since changed its name to St. Petersburg, where the grandmother, after many persuasions, issued various documents from the home. "The older generation often keeps the record, from past experience, but they are not always ready to release it. Many times the documents are kept in a bag and they do not know exactly what is in there. When you look through documents with a professional eye, you discover treasures," said Har Shalom.

"We provide unequivocal recommendations to the rabbinical courts, and in 90 percent of the cases we are able to ascertain Judaism and recognize the Judaism of five extended family members on average," he added.

The ancient document, in addition to the marriage certificate of the grandmother's parents who revealed names of Jewish character, proved that the family members maintained a marriage within Judaism throughout the ages, thus making it possible not to marry.
