The aircraft, belonging to the Delta airline, made an emergency landing at the airport of that Californian city, so it had to release fuel to reduce weight.

A plane returning to Los Angeles International Airport, in California, spilled fuel over an elementary school, affecting several children and adults, the Los Angeles County Fire Department said.

At least 17 children and 9 adults suffered minor injuries from the fuel spill. All were treated at the school for first aid services, without having to be transferred to a hospital.

Delta airline flight 89 had just taken off from the airport to Shanghai, China, when it had to return for an emergency landing, the Los Angeles Times reported.

"Shortly after takeoff, flight 89 from LAX to Shanghai experienced an engine problem that required the plane to return to LAX," Delta spokesman Adrian Gee said, according to the cited media. "The plane landed safely after an emergency fuel release to reduce weight on landing."

The plane landed shortly after safely, police said.
