Indian police killed a man who was holding 20 women and children hostage in his home in the north of the country after a ten-hour standoff.
"The hostages who were being held in the village of Farrukhabad at gunpoint are fine," said Oanesh Kumar Awasti, home minister of the state of Uttar Pradesh, according to Reuters reported, adding that the perpetrator was serving a period of parole after the end of his life imprisonment sentence on a murder charge.
Awasti mentioned the death of a woman and the injury of two policemen and a village resident during the rescue operation.
The man took the hostages after inviting children and women from the village to his home, claiming his daughter's birthday party, while the police considered the man's motive "unclear".
