An Indian man from a village near the city of Prochabad in northern India organized a one-year-old daughter for a fake birthday party. He took advantage of the party to kidnap more than 20 children, who he held hostage in the residence. Local media outlets have identified the man as Sabhesh Bethham, who is facing a murder charge but was released on bail. A local reporter told the BBC that "he believed the locals were responsible for his arrest in the murder case and he kidnapped their children for revenge."

The policemen who arrived on the scene negotiated with him for about 10 hours, with the aim of freeing the children, but finally decided to break into the building. Bethem was killed in the shootings with police and children from the age of six to 15, rescued and taken to safety.

Later, residents in the area beat his wife to death. The woman was apparently attacked by neighbors who saw her trying to escape. Police said locals threw bricks and stones at her. The police officer told local media that "she suffered head injuries and bleeding on the way to the hospital," but died from her wounds before she could reach him. It's unclear if she was involved in the kidnapping or not.

A local reporter told the BBC that residents spent the night in fear. "There was fear in the neighborhood and no one was sleeping. Everyone was worried about the children's safety," the reporter said. "The police tried to convince him to surrender for a few hours. They called for special forces when their attempt failed."

While the children were being kept in the building, only one six-month-old girl was allowed out, with Bethem moving her to her neighbor through the porch, seven hours after kidnapping the children.

When police arrived, Bethem began shooting from the house. Umm Prakesh Singh district chief of police said, "When we realized he had gunshot capabilities, and after his bomb threats, all senior police officers decided to attack him." He said that while trying to break into the home, Bethem was killed. His wife, two police officers and one passerby were injured in the shooting.

According to a report in the India newspaper today, Bethem sent a letter to the local government in the district, complaining about the lack of services in his home, for which he received government housing, he claimed. During the drama hours of the blockade, several television channels contacted his home to ask if he was ready to present his demands to the government or authorities.
