(CNN Spanish) - Pope Francisco received Argentina's president Alberto Fernández this Friday at a meeting held at the Library of the Apostolic Palace of the Vatican. According to the Argentine state agency Télam, the meeting lasted 44 minutes.

At the end of the meeting alone, they made a protocol exchange of gifts. The pontiff handed Fernández a medallion-shaped sculpture that symbolizes peace, which contains an olive tree, a vine and a dove. According to Télam, Francisco said that "I chose this one to be messengers of peace."

For his part, the Argentine president handed the Pope a handmade fabric, prepared by young people from the civil association Granja Andar, a bust of the Servant of God and a book about Buenos Aires coffees.

The Pope and Fernández left with the first Argentine lady, Fabiola Yañez and delegation officials.

Télam reported that the pope had an unusual gesture with Fernandez by signing one of the five writings he gave him, the 2019 apostolic exhortation dedicated to youth, "Christus Vivit."

Prior to the meeting, a mass “for reconciliation” was celebrated by Argentine Bishop Marcelo Sñanchez Sorondo in the Basilica
from San Pedro.
