The popular Chilean writer Luis Sepúlveda, who lives in northern Spain, was infected with the new coronavirus (COVID-19), the health authorities of Portugal announced on Sunday, where he was for the past week.
The 70-year-old author had the first symptoms on February 25 when he had already returned to Asturias, the Portuguese General Directorate of Health said, since the writer had been in northern Portugal from February 18 to 23 to participate in A literary festival.
The regional government of Asturias announced on Saturday that it had detected a first case of coronavirus in a 70-year-old man, but did not identify him.
"The patient is stable. His wife, a 66-year-old woman who also has symptoms , will be tested," he said, specifying that the couple had been admitted to the Central University Hospital of Asturias.
The Portuguese General Directorate of Health called on all the people who had "close contact" with Sepúlveda , who participated in a festival near Porto (to the north), to perform at their offices.
Portugal does not have a confirmed case of coronavirus for now, while neighboring Spain has so far 73.
The number of people affected by the coronavirus in the world amounts to 88,257, including 2,996 deaths, in 66 countries and territories, according to a balance sheet established by the AFP from official sources this Sunday.
