Citizen engagement pegged to the body, hundreds of bosses of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) have decided, this year again, to embark on the adventure of municipalities. Of the 34,816 mayors in office on January 1, 2019, only 6.3% were artisans, merchants and business owners, or nearly 2,200, according to figures from the Ministry of the Interior. Statistics which testify to the difficulty of reconciling the life of mayor and owner of a small business. As for the exploiting farmers, they represent 14% of the city councilors, that is two points less than the executives and higher intellectual professions.
