Why was the Tokyo Olympics postponed? 1:56

(CNN in Spanish) - For the first time in history, the threat of disease causes the suspension of an edition of the Olympic Games. This time the coronavirus forces Tokyo 2020 to be celebrated in 2021.

The postponement of the Games is full of economic ramifications, both for the sponsors of the event and also the media that have the rights to televise them.

The organizers of Tokyo 2020 indicated in December that the cost of hosting the event was US $ 12.3 billion, and according to the Reuters agency, that figure does not include the cost of moving the marathon and athletic march events from Tokyo to Sapporo to avoid the summer heat. That decision was made in October 2019.

The Tokyo National Stadium alone, where the opening and closing ceremonies will be held, cost $ 1.4 billion.

In addition, massive investments have been made in Japan to improve transportation routes, build enclosures, and remodel tourist sites to receive the 90 million visitors that Prime Minister Shinzo Abe expected by 2020.

The rights to broadcast the event also reach stratospheric figures. In May 2014, the NBC network agreed to pay $ 7.7 billion for the rights to the Olympic Games until the 2032 edition.

Other Tokyo 2020 figures:

- 11,000 athletes will compete in the Tokyo Olympics in 2021

- Second time that Tokyo will host some Games (the first was in 1964)

- 68,000 is the seating capacity of the Tokyo National Stadium

- More than 6 million cell phones were used to manufacture the Olympic and Paralympic Games medals

- Approximately 18,000 cardboard beds were manufactured for the Olympic Village. They will all be recycled, according to the organizers
