Coronavirus: daily death toll in Spain drops to 367 dead, one-month low

2020-04-24T12:01:48.028Z

The number of people cured also exceeds for the first time the number of people newly infected.

Spain announced on Friday that 367 people died in 24 hours from the new coronavirus. This is the lowest daily balance in a month, bringing the total number of deaths to 22,524. However, there is still some doubt about this total, the number of deaths in retirement homes being questionable: it could be five times more important than advertised.

The third country in the world most bereaved by the pandemic, Spain has not announced such a low daily toll since the 394 deaths on March 22, according to the Ministry of Health. The total number of cases is 219,764, including people whose tests have shown that they have developed antibodies against the disease.

Furthermore, "this is the first day on which we can give a higher number of recovered people than that of new notified cases," said the director of the Center for Coordination of Health Alerts and Emergencies, Fernando Simón, welcoming the announcement "Good news, if you can say".

The number of new patients cured is 3,105, while 2,796 new confirmed cases were reported within 24 hours, he said.

The most bereaved regions are those of Madrid, the capital, with 7,765 dead, Catalonia (4,393) and Castile-La Mancha (2,259). Across the country, 35,295 health workers have been infected, the ministry said.

The very strict confinement to which the Spanish have been subjected since March 14 was extended Wednesday by the deputies until May 9 inclusive.
