There have been controls at the German external borders since mid-March. The Home Secretary has extended it one more time.

Berlin (dpa) - Federal Minister of the Interior Horst Seehofer (CSU) has extended the border controls on Austria, Switzerland, France, Luxembourg, and Denmark introduced because of the corona pandemic until May 15. The extension also applies to flights from Spain and Italy.

According to a letter from the ministry, the risk of infection from the corona virus is to be further successfully contained.

The controls had been ordered in mid-March to slow the spread of the coronavirus. Since then, people who are neither Germans nor permanently resident here can only come to Germany for a "valid reason". For example, EU citizens who travel through Germany to their home country or truck drivers are allowed to enter the country. Entry is also restricted to certain border crossings.

According to the current status, the first openings may take place on May 15. For example, Schleswig-Holstein's Prime Minister Daniel Günther (CDU) has agreed with Federal Minister of the Interior Horst Seehofer (CSU) that the border to Denmark will gradually open from mid-May. "We spoke on the phone today and agreed to develop a concrete timetable in which steps the border with Denmark can be opened from May 15 at the latest," Günther told the German Press Agency on Monday.
