Hong Kong version of the National Security Law|Trade unions and student organizations set up multiple polling stations to decide whether to strike or strike

2020-06-20T12:53:52.932Z

The National People's Congress passed the "Hong Kong version of the National Security Law" earlier. The "Two Millions and Three Strikes Union United Front", which gathers 30 labor unions, and the "Secondary Student Action Preparation Platform" held a strike strike referendum today (20th), which ended at 8 pm. Zhang Zhiwei, deputy chairman of the External Affairs of the Hong Kong Social Workers Union, admitted that the number of members of the United Front is still far from the goal of 60,000 people voting, but he believes that "there is only hope if we persist." Yan Wuzhou, chairman of the new civil servants’ trade union, emphasized that the trade union has no established position on the national security law. It feels distorted and unfair to the government’s characterization of the referendum as an anti-national security law activity. It also urges the government to address the rights of colleagues to express their opinions.

Zhang Zhiwei, deputy chairman of the External Affairs of the Hong Kong Social Workers Union, admitted that the number of members of the United Front is still far from the goal of 60,000 people voting, but he believes that "there is only hope if we persist."

Yan Wuzhou, chairman of the new civil servants’ trade union, emphasized that the trade union has no established position on the national security law. It feels distorted and unfair to the government’s characterization of the referendum as an anti-national security law activity. It also urges the government to address the rights of colleagues to express their opinions.

Voting ends at 8pm

A total of 30 trade unions participated in the referendum, and a referendum will be held on the national security law, future strike actions, and various trade union issues. There are 23 polling stations in all districts of Hong Kong and Kowloon. Members who have joined the union can vote from 10 am to 8 pm. Ten of these polling stations can "join the union and vote." After the voting is completed tonight, the conference will be invoiced at the Ciwenshan St. Wende Church ticketing station.

Some union members increased by 70%, still far from 60,000 voting goals

According to Zhang Zhiwei, vice president of the Hong Kong Social Workers' Union, the number of members of some trade unions has increased by 70% in two weeks, which shows the determination of Hong Kong people to fight against evil laws. He admitted that the number of members of the United Front is still far from the goal of 60,000 people voting, but he believes that "there is hope only by persistence" and he is confident of the referendum result.

New civil servant union Yan Wuzhou: The government has misunderstood the referendum on the National Security Law

Yan Wuzhou, chairman of the new civil servants’ trade union, emphasized that the trade union has no established position on the national security law. He feels misunderstood and unfair to the government’s characterization of the referendum as an anti-national security law activity, and urges the government to address the right of colleagues to express their opinions. He said that in the future, there will be less and less room for citizens to express their opinions, but as long as the breath remains, the union will reserve the right to express opinions for themselves. He also said that 60,000 members are the specific goal of the referendum. If the goal is not reached, the union will make further discussions.

The Director General of the Hong Kong Federation of Trade Unions Meng Zhaoda criticized that the adoption of the Hong Kong version of the National Security Law by the CCP is a "overlord". "Have you ever asked the people of Hong Kong whether they want it? The issue is about Hong Kong's survival, but it has never consulted the people of Hong Kong." He said that Hong Kong is already filled with white terror, and also cited examples of teachers who were not renewed, civil servants were demoted, and the order of polygamy was reduced to "prohibition of marches and assembly orders." He hoped that the citizens would use the vote they have today to overcome fear with the truth.

Zheng Jialang: It is expected that accounting will happen after the autumn

A spokesman for the "Secondary School Action Preparation Platform", Zheng Jialang, said that there are seven polling stations in Hong Kong for middle school students to vote. He called on students to participate in the physical voting in person to make the referendum more credible. He reiterated that it is not illegal to hold a civil referendum in Hong Kong. If the government suppresses voting rights, it violates human rights, and urges the government not to "make small moves."

Zheng described this referendum as the last public mobilization before the National Security Law was enacted. I hope students will cherish the voting opportunities. He admits that it is inevitable for students to be "accounted after the autumn", because the government has no room for thinking and discussion, and hopes that students can measure the consequences before voting.
