A huge demonstration was held yesterday (Sunday) in Minsk, the capital of Belarus, against dictator Alexander Lukashenko, despite military warnings. The demonstrators even briefly approached the veteran ruler's residence, before dispersing without violent incidents.

Lukashenko, who has ruled Russia for the past 26 years, called the protesters "rats" and appeared in official media footage wearing a protective vest and holding a rifle in an attempt to project that he did not intend to give up. The demonstrations, which erupted following the presidential election two weeks ago, are the biggest challenge to his rule and are a test of the security forces' loyalty to him.

Russia, Belarus's main ally, has raised its voice against the opposition leader. Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said her statements appeared to be aimed at a Western audience.

"She seems to have started making political statements, assaults, demanding protests from workplaces, strikes, demonstrations," Lavrov was quoted as saying by the RIA news agency. He described her political agenda as the opposite of beneficial. According to him, it focuses on creating a division through fueling anti-Russian sentiment and reducing Russian language and culture. Lavrov even said she wanted to join the EU and NATO.

Tichnovskaya, who speaks Russian in Belarus, said she wanted to see Belarus maintain close ties with Russia, but that she should remain independent and not integrate further with Russia.

Lavrov said calls for Lukashenko's retirement On the part of the protesters are an attempt to create a crisis like the one experienced by Venezuela.
