Trump positive for Covid-19: imbroglio and doubts about the health of the US president

But how is Donald Trump really doing?

"Alright," as White House doctor Dr Sean Conley assured him, "with symptoms reducing and improving"?

Or are we to believe an anonymous source who told the NY Times that the "President's vital signs over the past 24 hours have been very disturbing" and that "the next 48 hours will be critical in terms of care"?

"There is no clear path to his recovery," the source reportedly added.

According to another source, also anonymous, quoted by CNN, Trump had to be placed on oxygen, probably Friday.

Contradictory statements which are enough to alarm a country already shaken by two huge successive thunderclaps in 24 hours.

The announcement on Friday that Trump tested positive for Covid-19 had not yet been digested as the president, a black mask on his lower face, was boarding the Marine One helicopter for the military hospital Walter Reed… where he will have to stay a few days.

Saturday morning, the press conference of his doctors, far from reassuring the Americans or even simply from clarifying the situation, caused confusion.

According to the medical team treating him, the president was not on oxygen this Saturday, but Dr Conley was evasive when reporters asked him if he had received any earlier.

He also created perplexity by referring to the "72 hours" since the diagnosis, a time inconsistent with previous statements, because it would trace Donald Trump's positive test back to Wednesday, instead of Thursday as previously reported.

But the White House quickly corrected the doctor, indicating that he was talking about the third day.

It even seems that the president knew he was positive long before what he said ... and yet he kept the events planned in his campaign calendar, endangering his collaborators and all those who were. in contact with him.

The race for the White House continues

It is a succession of hard blows for the president who had already lived a bad week.

The NY Times had revealed that the president had hardly paid federal taxes for 15 years.

And on Tuesday night, Trump completely missed the opportunity to win in the presidential debate with his rival Joe Biden.

Everything now depends of course on the health of the president.

If unable to perform his duties, he can complete a declaration to that effect and pass his credentials to Vice President Pence, a procedure that Presidents Ronald Reagan and George Bush used for colonoscopies.

But we are not there yet.

One month before a ballot that will take place on the scheduled date of November 3 (only Congress could change the date and it never did), the race for the White House continues.

Millions of Americans have already voted by mail.

Trump's next debate against compromised Biden

Trump is going to have to change his strategy anyway.

He was counting on catching up with his rival, far ahead of him in the polls, in the home stretch, talking about everything, China, the economy that was about to pick up and the jobs that this recovery would create, Wall Street records, by Joe Biden "the sleeper with faltering mental health", in short everything except his management of a pandemic that has killed more than 200,000 people in the United States, by far the most bereaved country on the planet.

He had planned to crisscross the country and multiply the gatherings of his supporters, hoping to convince the last undecided in critical states such as Florida or Michigan to join him.

These plans fell through.

His campaign team suspended events in which he or members of his family were to participate but kept the activities of those around him, Vice President Pence for example.

Trump's next debate against Biden is in serious jeopardy.

Biden, he did not suspend his campaign.

The Democratic candidate is playing on velvet right now.

He was tested on Friday and then traveled to Michigan.

Behind his mask, he spoke of the president's positive test and insisted on the dangers of the virus.

But, concerned about his image as a "fair-play politician", he ordered his troops to "refrain from commenting on the situation on social networks" and not to broadcast the negative television messages planned on Trump and his pandemic management.

For now anyway.
