Millions of legally cast votes continue to be counted in the US, as the presidential race between Donald Trump and Joe Biden shrinks to a handful of battling states.

Experts had warned for months that a result might not be known on election night, or even days later, due to record-breaking vote-by-mail numbers.

Overnight, Trump proclaimed his supposed victory and called for the legitimate counting of votes taking place across the country to be halted, in a chilling threat to American democracy.

Votes are still being counted in several key US states and no winner has been determined in the presidential election.

As of 5:20 AM ET, Biden held the Electoral College lead with 224 votes to Trump's 213;

270 electoral votes are needed to win the Presidency.

Eta made landfall in Nicaragua

Hurricane Eta made landfall in Nicaragua with sustained winds of 225 km / h.

After several hours it degraded to a tropical storm.

The tropical cyclone will linger over part of Central America, causing "catastrophic and life-threatening flash floods, river overflows, and landslides," according to the National Hurricane Center (NHC).

Eta will return to the Caribbean Sea and then to Cuba and South Florida, according to the NHC forecast.
