Azerbaijani citizens celebrated in the streets of Baku after President Ilham Aliyev announced that army forces had occupied Shosha, the second largest city in the Nagorno-Karabakh enclave, but Armenian officials denied that the city had fallen.

Shosha, known to the Armenians as Shoshi, is of cultural and strategic importance to both sides and is located 15 km south of the largest city in the

Steenkart enclave. Stefankart.

More than a thousand people were killed during the six weeks of fighting in Nagorno-Karabakh, a mountainous enclave known worldwide as part of Azerbaijan but populated and controlled by ethnic Armenians.

"(This day) will be a great day in the history of Azerbaijan," Aliyev said in a statement on the occupation of the city.

In Baku, many residents gathered celebrating, waving flags and chanting slogans, while drivers honked from their cars.

Officials in Nagorno-Karabakh and Armenia's Ministry of Defense have denied Aliyev's statement.

Nagorno-Karabakh's rescue services said Shoshi remained a "distant dream" for the Azeris, "despite much destruction, the fortified city is facing enemy blows."

Armenia's Defense Ministry said fierce fighting continued, while the Ministry of Defense in the enclave said it had repulsed a series of civilian attempts to advance towards the city.

Azerbaijan, backed by Turkey, has made significant progress in the enclave territory during the most difficult round of fighting in more than a quarter of a century.

Within one month, it had conquered most of the lands around Nagorno-Karabakh and within it it had lost in the previous war in the 1990s.

Turkey congratulated Azerbaijan after losing weight over the occupation of the city.

"I congratulate the Azeri brothers on their victory in Shosha," said Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who spoke in the northwest of the country.

"I believe it is a sign that the rest of the occupied lands will be liberated soon as well."

On Saturday, Erdogan spoke with Russian President Vladimir Putin, saying Armenia must withdraw from the Azerbaijani territories and should be "persuaded to sit down at the negotiating table."

The Kremlin said Putin had told Erdogan that he had talked to the leaders of the two countries, which were formerly part of the Soviet Union, and focused on "finding solutions for a quick cessation of hostilities and a political and diplomatic settlement."

Fighting continues despite several international ceasefire attempts, two of them by Russia, but these immediately collapsed.

Moscow, which is in a defense alliance with Armenia but also has close ties with Azerbaijan, fears the presence of foreign fighters in the Azeri ranks, but Baku and Ankara deny this.

Armenia turned to Russia for help, but the Kremlin stressed that it would only intervene if the fighting reached its territory.

No country in the world recognizes Nagorno-Karabakh, not even Armenia, and the territory is considered part of Azerbaijan.
