Saeb Erekat, a senior Palestinian Authority official, died today (Tuesday) from a complication of the corona virus he contracted.

Erekat was hospitalized at Hadassah Ein Kerem Hospital, where he was brought due to a deterioration in his medical condition, and following a request submitted to Israel by the Palestinian Authority.

He was evacuated by an Israeli ambulance from his home in Jericho for urgent medical treatment.

Earlier today his condition deteriorated once again due to difficulty breathing, and he was put to sleep and respirated.



The senior Palestinian official, who has been a prominent figure in Palestinian diplomacy for the past decades, underwent lung transplantation in 2017 due to lung disease, and was therefore at risk when he contracted the corona virus.

He was one of the architects of the Oslo Accords and the top advisers to PA Chairman Abu Mazen and his predecessor, Yasser Arafat.

Erekat attended the Madrid Conference in 1991, the beginning of public negotiations with Israel, and continued to be part of the talks over the years with various leaderships in Jerusalem and Washington, including the Camp David summit in 2000 until the last round of talks under the Obama administration that exploded in 2014.

He was born in Abu Dis in 1955, when she was still under Jordanian rule, the sixth of seven children.

At the age of 17 he began studying political science at the University of San Francisco and completed a doctorate in peace studies at the University of Bradford in the United Kingdom.

Erekat gained American citizenship and later became a lecturer at al-Najah University in the Nablus area, and even worked as a journalist for al-Quds newspaper for 12 years.



In recent years, with the stalemate in negotiations with Israel and the Palestinians, there has been much talk about the danger of the collapse of the two-state vision.

He spoke out strongly against the normalization agreements of the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain with Israel, calling it a "knife in the back" of the Palestinians.
