The Open University of Hong Kong announced that it has completed the review and selection process for the new school name. From 1,100 new school name suggestions, the new school has been named "Hong Kong Metropolitan University", English name "Hong Kong Metropolitan University", or "HKMU" for short .

President Huang Yushan pointed out that the word "metropolis" is inclusive and academically neutral. The university has a larger space for future development and will not be limited by the name of the school. It can also reflect that Hong Kong is a world metropolis and the school's diverse vitality.

The school will submit the decision to the Education Bureau and submit the amendment to the Legislative Council. It is expected that the new school name can be used within a few months at the earliest and a year at the latest.

The school will hold a new school badge design competition later.

At the beginning of its establishment, the Open University mainly provided distance education. Since 2000, it started to offer full-time courses. After that, it joined the university joint recruitment. In August this year, it announced the public recruitment of new school names.

The Open University publicly solicited proposals for a new school name in August this year, and once became a hot topic among Hong Kong people.

OUHK President Huang Yushan, Academic Vice President Guan Qingping, Vice President (Resources and Development) Lu Ruhan, and University Rename Selection Committee Secretary Liang Ruzhao, held a press conference today (11th) to announce the new name of the university as "The Metropolitan University of Hong Kong".

Previous suggestions include "Lion Rock University" and "Kowloon University of Hong Kong"

Huang Yushan stated that the OUHK Council started the renaming work about two years ago. After consulting people inside and outside the school, more than 1,100 suggestions for new school names were collected. 49% of the recommendations are from the public, 26% are from alumni and students, and 22% are from the OUHK faculty.

There are about hundreds of school name suggestions that have not been repeated, such as "Hong Kong Kowloon University", "Hong Kong Metropolitan University", "Hong Kong Oriental University", "Hong Yan University", "Hong Kong University of Applied Sciences", "Lion Rock University" , "Hong Kong Bauhinia University", etc.

Vice President (Resources and Development) Lu Ruhan said that the new school name was only approved by the Board of Trustees yesterday. In fact, the Legislative Council must pass the university regulations before the new school name can be used.

Until the new name is formally adopted, the university will continue to use the name "The Open University of Hong Kong".
