The Open University announced that its "University Name Selection Committee" has completed the deliberation and selection of the new school name. The new school name is tentatively designated "The Metropolitan University of Hong Kong", which will be submitted to the Education Bureau and submitted to the Legislative Council for amendments.

At the beginning of its establishment, the Open University mainly provided distance education. Since 2000, it started to offer full-time courses. After that, it joined the university joint recruitment. In August this year, it announced the public recruitment of new school names.

The Open University publicly solicited proposals for a new school name in August this year, and once became a hot topic among Hong Kong people.

OUHK President Huang Yushan, Academic Vice President Guan Qingping, Vice President (Resources and Development) Lu Ruhan, and University Rename Selection Committee Secretary Liang Ruzhao, held a press conference today (11th) to announce the new name of the university as "The Metropolitan University of Hong Kong".

Huang Yushan stated that the OUHK’s Board of Trustees initiated the renaming work two years ago. After consulting people inside and outside the school, more than 1,100 new school names were collected. Among them, there were about hundreds of school name suggestions that were not repeated. The committee went through three rounds of selection. Three options were selected. After consulting with language experts and knowing that there was no ambiguity, the school management committee made a decision on the three proposals yesterday and unanimously decided to adopt the "Hong Kong Metropolitan University".

He explained that the "metropolis" reflects Hong Kong as a world metropolis with diverse vitality; and the OUHK is a comprehensive university, not a purely liberal arts or science university. The name is inclusive and academically neutral. There is a lot of room for future development. The school name is restricted.

Vice President (Resources and Development) Lu Ruhan explained in an interview with "Hong Kong 01" earlier that the Open University was established for about 30 years. At the beginning, it mainly provided distance education, but since 2000, it has offered full-time associate degree courses and joined JUPAS in 2007. However, many people still think that the OUHK only provides distance courses, so that graduates often encounter obstacles and misunderstandings when seeking employment, university exchanges and seeking development opportunities. Therefore, after consulting with stakeholders, they decided to change the school name.
