The United States has arrested a Kenyan citizen who planned to hijack a plane and smash it in a tower in the country, the FBI announced tonight (Wednesday).

Culo 'Abdi' Abdullah was arrested in the Philippines last year on charges of weapons offenses, after attending a flight school in the country.

Prosecutors did not specify where he planned to carry out the attack.

According to the FBI, he received instructions from a senior member of the Somali terrorist organization a-Shabab who was responsible for a combined attack on a hotel in Kenya last year.

Abdullah has denied what is attributed to him, but he will remain in custody until another hearing next month.

According to the charges revealed by the FBI today, the 30-year-old Abdullah was transferred to the United States from the Philippines yesterday.

He is charged with a number of terrorist offenses, including plotting to hijack a plane and conspiring to murder Americans.

He enrolled in a flight school in the Philippines in 2016, and according to the indictments completed the classes required to obtain a pilot's license "in order to receive training to carry out a 9/11-style attack."

Al-Shabab is the Somali arm of al-Qaeda, which is responsible for that terrorist attack in which planes crashed on the Twin Towers and the Pentagon.

Nearly 3,000 people were killed in the worst terrorist attacks ever on US soil.

Investigators said that during his pilot training, Abdullah investigated how to break into the cockpit of a commercial plane, "information about the tallest structure in a central city in the United States," and how to obtain an American visa.

The planned attack was part of al-Shabab's operation known as "Jerusalem will never be Jewish," which was launched following the relocation of the American embassy to Jerusalem.

"About 20 years after the 9/11 terrorist attacks, there are those who remain obligated to carry out terrorist attacks against U.S. citizens," said the acting FBI deputy, William F. Sweeney Jr.

"We claim that Abdullah is one of them. He obtained a flight license overseas, learned how to hijack a plane in order to cause a multi-casualty incident in our territory."
