Ontario's Treasury Secretary for Canada, Rod Phillips, announced his resignation today (Thursday) after it was revealed he had spent a Christmas holiday in the Caribbean, contrary to his government's coronation guidelines.

Phillips disguised the family vacation in a series of tweets and posts on social media in which he was seen at home, or responding to Dioma matters.

Phillips, for his part, responded by saying, "I deeply regret the trip. If I had known Ontario would go into quarantine, I would not have traveled."

Ontario's Prime Minister Doug Ford is under pressure to resign himself after it was announced he knew about the finance minister's trip.

"He never told anyone he was leaving. He probably did not tell me he was leaving. I planned to have a very difficult discussion with Rod when he returned," the prime minister said.

It's #ChristmasEve.

To my constituents in #Ajax & people across Ontario, all the best during this special time of year.

Even as COVID-19 changes how we celebrate, we should reflect on what makes Christmas so special to us - including family & the act of giving.

#MerryChristmas!

But most of the public outrage has been directed at the Phillips scam on social media.

On Christmas Day, the finance minister uploaded a video in which he is seen next to a burning fireplace with a glass of festive drink and a traditional cookie house, wishing health to the country’s residents.

Phillips even said that he fully understands the difficulties facing residents during the holiday.

It is possible that the anger over the minister would have been smaller if the corona figures in the state of Ontario had not been on a sharp rise for close to a week.

More than 2,000 people have been diagnosed with the virus in the past day, a record in the country.
