CHRONICLE - After eight years without obvious results, is it not time to warn African states that it is their responsibility to manage their security?


The French army has been deployed in the Sahel for eight years now.

In the only week straddling New Years Day 2021, five of its soldiers were killed there.

They were killed in the east of Mali, by these homemade bombs hidden under the sand of the tracks, which one calls IED (Improvised Explosive Devices) in the military jargon, since the last Western interventions in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Eight years is already longer than the Algerian war.

The results in terms of regional stabilization are not dazzling, to say the least.

It is a file where it is better to avoid the "has to" and the "must be", because no one has a miracle potion to guarantee the success of Western interventions in the land of Islam.

It would be absurd to precipitate the departure of the French forces, because they are today the only ones to prevent Mali, a former colony of French West Africa, as large as two and a half times the Hexagon,
